Choose broadcast reception

An internet-only speaker depends on a working network. For a simple backup, look for an FM radio that can operate without a plug socket. Battery-powered or wind-up models offer different ways of keeping it going.

Check before buying

Look for clear controls, a readable tuning scale and an aerial you can position safely. Check which batteries it takes and whether the rechargeable battery can be replaced. A tiny built-in solar panel or a hand crank should not be assumed to provide unlimited power for phones.

Try it in your home

Tune in to a reliable local or national news station and write down the frequency. Test reception where you are likely to sit during an outage. Keep the instructions and spare batteries with the radio.

Share verified updates

During disruption, pass on the time, source and location of an announcement. Avoid forwarding an alarming screenshot without checking it. Local authorities, network operators and established broadcasters are better starting points than anonymous social-media posts.
