Put light where you need it
A handheld torch is useful for checking the house; a stable lantern can light a room; a head torch keeps both hands free. Start with one reliable light in a known place, then add what suits your home.
Make battery choices simple
Check the battery type printed on the device and keep a suitable spare set. Avoid mixing old and new cells or different battery types. Rechargeable lights still need a plan for a prolonged outage, so consider how you would recharge them or use another light.
Test in the dark
Can everyone find the switch? Can someone with reduced hand strength open the battery compartment? Keep a light within reach of the bed and near important steps without creating a trip hazard.
Prefer torches to candles
National Grid advises against candles and paraffin lights because of their risks. Do not balance lights on unstable surfaces or leave battery compartments accessible to young children. Store loose batteries safely, protect terminals where appropriate, and follow the product instructions for long-term storage.
