Reduce the demand for heat
Put on warm layers and use blankets or a sleeping bag. Choose a room you can use safely and keep essential items nearby. Keep escape routes clear and take extra care around stairs and loose bedding.
Do not improvise a heater
Never use a barbecue, outdoor heater or generator indoors, in a garage or in an enclosed space. Carbon monoxide can be fatal. Do not use a gas hob or oven as a room heater. Follow manufacturer instructions for any appliance and keep ventilation clear.
Check on vulnerable people
People with health conditions, babies and older people may need help sooner. Agree a safe place to go if the home becomes unsuitable, rather than waiting until everyone is very cold. Follow local authority or emergency-service instructions about assistance or rest centres.
Keep light simple
Use torches and stable battery lanterns rather than candles. Make sure batteries work before forecast severe weather. Keep your phone for communication instead of using its torch as the main light for the whole evening.
